For easier understanding, I have divided this IELTS Cue Card into three parts ➡️ IntroductionQuestions, and Conclusion.

Introducing a time when you helped a friend

As Oscar Wilde once said, the smallest act of kindness is worth more than the grandest intention. So today, I would take this opportunity to talk about one such moment of kindness when I helped my best friend.

When it was?

Last weekend, Jenny (my friend) called me and said that her parents found out that she was part of a music band. Jenny loved playing the guitar while her parents are accomplished doctors and want her to only pursue medicine as a career. So, there was a conflict!

How you helped him/her?

I did what my mother always does when I am upset. I let her continue talking. Then, reasoned out with her and told her that making a career as a musician wouldn’t possibly give her the luxuries of a doctor. Moreover, she was an average student, which meant if she failed her board exams, she would have to pull herself through the courses again. So it was best in her case that she apologize to her parents and promise that she would stop going to the music band until the exams got over.

Why you helped him/her?

Actually, her parents had locked her up in the room and threatened to throw away her guitar and cut her expenses if she did not mend her ways. It was past midnight when she called me so it was not possible for me to go to her home. But she needed help because being away from the guitar made her sad and angry at the world.

How you felt about it?

When Jenny apologized to her father, I felt relieved that Jenny listened to me. Her parents were nice enough to believe her, and she didn’t let them down. Jenny is now a researcher who is studying how music can help autistic children cope with their illness. Looks like she met her parents halfway.

Concluding the cue card

In the end I would just say that…Happiness is all about making someone smile and pull someone out of troubles. So I try to help people in need, go above and beyond, regardless of any intention of getting something in return.

How is online help different from real-life help?

Well, helping somebody online is more effective nowadays in this phase of COVID-19. You may have heard of Telemedicine, where doctors see their patients online and prescribe medicines. Whereas, physically going to the clinic can sometimes become a hassle.

Do you like helping others?

Yes, I pretty much like helping people. I believe helping others is the secret sauce to a happy life. It gives you a lot of inner satisfaction and mental happiness.

Should parents teach helping others to their children?

It seems to me that parents are obligated to teach good ethics to their children. Children grasp things quickly. If parents lead them by example in helping others, they follow their footsteps and become good samaritans in the future.

Will you help others in the future?

Definitely, I will be providing a real leg up to people whoever needs it. By engaging with other individuals and communities, I feel more connected to them.

How do you encourage children to help others?

I think it’s not a rocket science on how to encourage children to help people. They observe things closely and if you do what you preach, they’ll follow. In short, show them your own way of helping people, the children will be invigorated to do the same.
