Introduction

In a country like India, receiving cash as a present can be widely seen. You may also call it a tradition as it has been imbibed in our culture. So today, I would take this opportunity to talk about a time when I received a sum of money as a gift from a person in my family.

When did you receive the money?

Typically, people give each other cash gifts for birthdays, marriages, anniversaries, baby showers and other occasions. But I was surprised to see my Uncle giving me cash instead of a physical gift.

On my graduation day, my parents arranged a surprise party and everyone was invited. Luckily my Uncle who resides in Canada was on his trip to India. So, my father called him and invited his family to the party.

He agreed to come over and stayed with us for two days. Mr Shukla (my uncle) is really kind and modest, and I adore him. He constantly instils in me strong moral principles and throws a lot of affection towards me.

What did you do with it?

On the day of my graduation, when everyone was giving me flashy gifts. The only thing that strike me was a Canadian dollar of $100 denomination. I initially refused to accept the money.

But then, my parents told me not to say no to the elders because doing so would be disrespectful to them. So, I thanked my Uncle and accepted his gift.

Later that day, I put it in my safe and adored it for months.

How did you feel about the gift?

I still remember I felt butterflies in my stomach seeing the Canadian dollar.

Concluding the Cue Card

After having material possessions for so long, this was one of the times when I received money as a gift, and it was a welcome change.

FOLLOW-UP QUESTIONS

Following are the probable set of IELTS Speaking Part-3 follow-up questions for Describe a time when you received money as a gift cue card:

1) In your country, do parents give children money for doing housework?

No, it’s not so prevalent in India that parents give money to their children for doing household chores. I think that a youngster can learn about responsibility, self-care, and sharing work while living with others by helping around the house. But if you give him money for simple jobs, he’ll come to expect it and won’t do anything for free.

2) Is it important for children to have the right attitude towards money?

Attitudes towards money are often shaped during childhood and will have a lasting impact, defining financial behaviours well into adulthood. It’s never too early to start teaching your kids the importance of saving money. Learning to save helps children to set goals, and shows how earning interest helps money grow over time.

3) What do you think of the saying; love of money is the root of all evil?

This proverb, in my opinion, contains a lot of wisdom. Not only is love or an obsession with money the fundamental cause of misery, but it also causes a number of other issues in a person’s life, such as insecurity, an inability to trust others, a dysfunctional family, selfishness, etc.

4) Is it important to teach children how to manage their pocket money?

Yes, it is crucial to teach kids how to manage their pocket money so that they will grasp the worth and importance of money as adults, avoid wasting it, and manage their finances more effectively in the future. Managing money well allows them to distinguish between wants and needs, learn how to save and budget, and make wise spending decisions.
