Here’s the first sample answer to Describe an important thing you learned, not at school or college IELTS Speaking Cue Card:

Introduction

In my life, I have accomplished a lot of things that seemed challenging at first but they were simple to do once I got going. So today, I’d like to talk about an important thing that I learned to overcome fear.

When did you learn this thing?

The thing I’d like to talk about is swimming which I learned last year.

How did you learn it?

So I enrolled in swimming lessons close to my house. I finished the course despite my initial training experiences being terrifying.

I’m appreciative of my wonderful mentor. On the first day, I hung up my bathing suit in the locker room and hesitantly waited for the instructor and the other students to appear beside the pool.

But the shaking stopped far sooner than I had imagined, and everything began to appear “okay.” The teacher made me put on colourful water wings so I could stay afloat. This is how I learnt to swim.

Why did you think it was important to learn it?

Although I had always been frightened of the water, I realised how important it was to learn how to swim. I also thought that it would be a good form of exercise and would help me grow physically.

But things weren’t nearly as easy for me. My aquaphobia constantly sprang to the surface when I was near water.

Among other awful things I heard as a child, my mother told me she had once been dangling over a bridge, and my uncle almost drowned as a child in a poorly supervised swimming lesson. These experiences made learning this important thing even more difficult for me.

How did you feel when you learned it?

I now feel that the lessons I learned as a swimmer can lay the groundwork for a happy, fulfilling life. Whether in my professional life, relationships or hobbies, swimming has taught me how to live well.

Concluding the Cue Card

Finally, learning to swim was a Herculean task for me, but in the end, my determination paid off. So this is all about an important thing that I learned, but not at any school or college.

MODEL ANSWER 2

As humans, we are always learning, and this knowledge, along with our experiences in life, shapes who we become or decide to become. Last week, I was watching a TV documentary on “gardening” that I found to be both interesting and thought-provoking.

So today, I would love to talk about this thing!

That TV documentary has a series of episodes targeted at beginners to understand every little concept of gardening. I started off by learning to grow my own vegetables in the backyard. The results were spectacular. I was happier to see every new leaf taking shape.

Actually, 9 to 5 job was killing me from the inside. So, I think gardening gave me a way out. It is as important as other skills to learn just because gardening invites you to get outside, interact with other gardeners, and take charge of your own need for exercise, healthy food, and beautiful surroundings.

Not just that, if you’re digging, hauling, and harvesting; your physical strength, heart health, weight, sleep, and immune systems can all benefit from the work out.

I feel that gardening is a thing that is delightful in every way. On other days, even though I’m tethered to my desk, I find myself thinking about working among the humming bees, inhaling the fragrant petals of new blooms, biting into a green bean that’s just reached maturity, and feeling the rich, velvety dirt between my fingers.

My thing is gardening; it’s how I deal with everything nowadays.

FOLLOW-UP QUESTIONS

Following are the probable set of IELTS Speaking Part-3 follow-up questions for Describe an important thing you learned, not at school or college cue card:

1) What do children learn from their parents?

Parents are children’s first teachers as children emulate their parents. Even the most fundamental skills—how to eat, talk, dress, and behave—are taught to children by their parents. Children are keen observers of everything. They are always observing their parents. By listening, mimicking, and observing, they pick up both positive and negative habits.

2) Are some children well-behaved because of their parents?

Yes, I do believe that parents are mostly in charge of their children’s behaviour. However, they are not the only ones responsible for their children’s good or bad behaviour; other elements like the media, their friends, and their teachers also have a role in it.

3) Is it necessary for adults to learn new things?

Yes, I agree that if people stopped learning, life would become dull. Additionally, because of how quickly life is changing today, learning new skills is essential to surviving. My mom works in education. She was forced to learn and teach via Zoom during the difficult times when traditional classroom instruction was not an option. If she didn’t, she would have lost her job.

4) What are the options for learning new things?

There are conventional ways to learn new things, such as enrolling in hobby classes, contacting a friend or relative for advice, or reading how-to manuals. Then there are the more recent techniques, like browsing Google or watching YouTube channels like TEDx.

You know what, COVID has taught us that there has never been a better moment than now to pick up a new skill.
