Introducing a habit

Friendship is the bedrock of a happy life. The essence of friendship is about care and respect. It has nothing to do with money, attractiveness, or “the cool factor.” A true friend is there for you, no matter what, and having such a person in your life is a great gift.

Who your friend is?

So today I would like to talk about my best friend, my partner-in-crime Paritosh. He is a complete man with lots of good habits and that’s why he is the most likeable guy in our group.

What habit he/she has?

Actually, he has one peculiar trait of always being optimistic, no matter how how hard the situation could be. Paritosh always have a positive perspective on things.

When you noticed this habit?

I first observed this habit last year when due to COVID, there was an economic downturn and he lost his job and his house. So I decided to talk to him for emotional strength. But rather, in contrast, I was amazed to see his attitude towards the events.

He was hopeful and confident about finding another job which he in fact did in a matter of days only. And few days back, he bought a new house twice the size of his previous property. THAT’S THE POWER OF OPTIMISM!

Explain why you want to develop this habit?

Let’s be honest, I am a little pessimist. For example, if a friend doesn’t call for a few days, I assume I’ve done something wrong. So I want to develop this habit of positive thinking. In addition to that, a hopeful attitude has also been linked to happy romantic relationships, a reduced likelihood of becoming cognitively impaired, fewer sick days and lower levels of pain.

Follow-ups

Following are the probable set of IELTS Speaking Part-3 follow up questions that could be asked in Describe a habit your friend has and you want to develop cue card:

What habits should children have?

I think children should wake up early and sleep on time. They should brush their teeth twice a day, once in the morning and once at night. They should respect their elders, their parents, and their teachers. These are basic habits, I think all children must possess, but there are also plenty of other good habits, which parents should help children develop.

What should parents do to teach their children good habits?

Having a good habit is like having a very important life skill. I think the parents should start from simpler activities such as handwashing for instance. Ask children to join you, and sing a song together. This turns the habit into a game and allows children to associate feelings of fun and positivity with handwashing. Then parents should move on to encourage children to use good manners, to enjoy physical activities, and to take part in skills that will develop their mental abilities.

What influences do children with bad habits on other children?

Children with bad habits definitely influence other children. For example, stubbornness generally passes onto one child to another. But the solution lies with the parents..They should properly mentor their children so as to keep them away from bullying, truancy & delinquency.

Why do some habits change when people get older?

I think the change in habits is because of changing priorities with age. For instance, as people get older, they tend to work more so that they could earn more, and this rat race is never ending. This chronic busyness make it difficult to catch up health & fitness goals.
